The word “in-laws” is as horrific as a slasher movie. Meeting “mom and dad” is not easy…especially in orthodox South-Asian culture, where the bride needs to be as coy with them as on her wedding day. Pleasing this “beastly” group is the most important task and being the newest member it is you have to make a place in everyone’s heart. But the key to door is to just being warm and welcoming. Cook for them, invite them for dinner, clean the house, and show your interior designing skills and just open up with a nice, flairy conversation. Just laugh, have fun, share experiences and get to know them intimately, as they are the new family.
Who doesn’t get delighted receiving a call or a gift on birthdays and anniversaries, just do that. Drop by for visits, take them for shopping, and most important of all – be sensitive to their needs and wants. Just, reflect how much they mean to you and that would be an assurance enough for them as you being the perfect mate for their beloved son.
Impressing your in-laws is an important accomplishment. You already have the heart of their son, but being accepted entirely in the family matters, especially if you are marrying in the family. Just remember it is about reading their expectations coupled with your presence of mind. Since a job well begun is half done, getting them on your side initially will go a long way towards a smooth journey in life.
